Well my first week was great, apart from a little problem with gers, which frustrated me on my bend new bike, but the riding was great.

First weekend I went out with a neighbour on a 20 mile ride, then most evenings I did a quick 11 mile lap.

But on Friday gears were really playing up, so I decided the bike would have to go back, plus I didn't wear shades (it was dark) and I got something in my eye.

By Monday the bike was back at LBS, and I had a nasty eye infection. Been dealing with that, and now have throat and ear infections.

I must say I'm a little gutted, I want to be out on my bike (with excellent eye protection! )

Up till Saturday I'd never felt better, in terms of fitness, energy, strength, now I'm a wreck, but not for long, just hope I can start riding agin Sat, get my bike back tomorrow and I'm assured it will ride perfectly!

So if you just have sore butt or legs, count your blessings!

It is quite normal for the gears on a brand new bike to go out of indexing a bit as everything settles in and the cables stretch a little. A good LBS will offer an after sales service to tweak everything up for you.

Yep.

I was told to bring my bike back after 100 miles for a free tweak. Did the job.

Yes - never underestimate the importance of good eye protection. Clear/yellow also needed for non-summer riding. I see loads of cyclists without eyewear which is nuts when you think of a Bee, Wasp or large Moth hitting an eyeball at 20/30/40 mph. Also overhanging branches etc on cycle paths and lanes are a 'swipe' hazard.

I do think everyone has suffered with a sore backside when they started riding the bike, but a good pair of cycling shorts soon fixes it,
I always wear glasses when riding the bike, you can ones with interchangeable lenses, so swap the lenses over depending the light outside

hope you get well soon and back out on the bike

While I have nothing against Helmets or Glasses I wear both sometimes, and sometimes I just like to get on my bike and ride it like I did as a kid without thinking where I am going (or thinking about Strava Sections) and without the health & safety brigade breathing down my neck, on a recent ride a young lady asked me where my helmet was and an equally young man said its not worth risking riding without one ! I wanted to point out to them that I had probably been riding a bike longer than their combined ages, but I just suggested they read the arguments for the pros and cons of Helmet wearing.
