It has a bigger range, 409% compared to 307% for the Alfine 8.
It supposedly has more even spacing between the gears, although that wasn't particularly evident when comparing the two using Sheldon's gear calculator.

That depends on what size sprocket you fit to the hub and what size chain ring you match it to. You can find tune the set up to suit your specific requirements so that the hub gives you the 409% gear range in a range that you want.
