If you scan through this post, it seems to be quite a challenge to narrow an Alfine 8. I've now ordered the final revision of the 'premium' Nexus 8 (R36) instead, which, I gather, is the essentially same as the Alfine. The Nexus is 132mm, which I assume would spring into 130mm spacing. I plan to find a thinner lock nut, which can get the hub down below 130mm.

I had mixed advice about cold-setting the frame, but it seems very possible if you have a steel frame.
