Hi All,

I'm a newbie when it comes to cycling so I'm just after some advice.

I bought a Scott Speedster S55 last year and have been happily cycling since. However now I feel like upgrading my wheels.

I'm currently running AlexRim Pro 28 Race that came as stock with my bike. I don't race or anything, ride around 100miles a week and have a budget of around £230.

Therefore 2 questions...does anyone know how much my AlexRim wheels weigh?
Secondly, I have my eyes on 2013 Mavic Aksium wheels. Would these be a good upgrade over my current wheels? In terms of weight, stiffness and ease of rolling?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Aksiums are fantastic for the money (as are the same price bracket Fulcrum and Easton wheels, I forget the model). Not really suited towards carrying pannier bags, etc, on the commute, but if its just a rider its cool.

I had the old alex DC19 rims on Tiagra hubs a few years back and the weight was only a little more than the Aksium. My alex rims were 32 spoke. You probably wont notice a weight difference, what you will notice is rolling resistance is smoother on the hub bearings and the bladed spokes cut through the air a little easier.

Thanks for the reply Downfader!

Yeah I don't commute on my bike or carry panniers. Just purely ride to beat my own PB's and try and make a dent on some Strava segments. I have been looking at Ksyriums but I cannot justify spending that much on wheels unfortunately.

I was wanting something that would put up with the roads of the Lake District. As they're not overly great and I heard these were almost bullet proof.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge but if the rolling resistance is smoother on the hub does that mean there will be a small gain in terms of average speed?

I'm hoping they'll offer some kind of speed gain over my Alex rims?

Thanks

Or go for a set of handbuilts (Mavic Open Pro or CXP33 rims, 105 hubs, 32 hole) Cost approx £200-220

Depends on the tech making the wheel, but I paid £40 a rim for open pro, £64 for spokes (I already have 105 hubs but a set are about £55)... thats a quid under 200. My LBS charges about £50 for wheel build.

Liamsles - it depends, I noticed an increase in my average speed when I first switched. Its not guaranteed on its own - fitness, clothing and other things can come into play
