Afghan attire

Those of us of a certain vintage will remember coats like this:

Now, in all the news items from Afghanistan I haven't seen one Afghan coat and I find that worrying and quite disturbing, have The Taliban banned Afghan coats?

I was there in 1973 and I never saw a local in one. Mind you, it was summer and pretty hot. I always thought that they were dreamed up by some stallholders on Portobello Road. A rumour went around that you could catch anthrax from them.

I've never been there but I did nearly buy one back in the seventies from a shop that sold that sort of stuff in Bell Walk in Gloucester.

Lady Slowmotion still has one that she bought in a market in Cambridge in the 70s. It's got embroidery on it too.

Sounds rather good, I hope it is one of her prized possessions and she never gets rid of it.

It has subsequently come out at a few fancy dress parties but she says it's too hot to dance in. Fortunately, tie-dyed T shirts saved the day.

A quick google tells me the breed originated in Afghanistan but I doubt many look like that.
The Taliban would come over far more friendly if they all had a beautifully coiffured dog in tow.

My father, a vet, told me that they are the most spectacularly stupid breed. They certainly look it.

The traditions pustin sheepskin coat, worn across central asia went out a fashion amongst locals before the hippy trail hit town. The only photo on t"internet is from 1920's.

This was just about the time that things went t1ts up in Afghanistan. Maybe the coats and dogs had something to do with it.

I had a three quarter length white one with Zoso (Led Zepplin) painted on the back. I loved that coat.
