hi all currently riding carrera crossfire 1 which comes as standard with kenda 700 45's. after a blow out on rear it was replaced with a schwalbe landcruiser tyre foc which is 700 42. my question is should i replace the second kenda with the same schwalbe tyre or should i get a pair of 28's like the marathon plus?Would the speed benefit outweigh the additional cost? on a budget so dont want to spend silly money! thanks in advance for any advice ^_^

28's would be significantly lighter and spin up quicker. Worth every penny. Marathon plus are a good choice for p protection

I have marathon plus 28s on the winter bike and they are heavy , roll badly and spin up slowly but I put up with that because of the p protection.

Is it worth going for narrower tyres in the winter and are there any other tyre recommendations for 28's besides the marathon plus. About 40% of my commute is trailpaths hut weekend club rides are 100% roads and I am after more speed but with puncture protection!

Hi,

I can't see any reason to to replace the Kenda on the back *. As a pair of tyres
they are more off road tyres, going to skinny 28mm road tyres is a moot point.

Depends what you want. If you want speed on the road they don't have to
be narrow. These will roll on the road, last ages, but are tough so not
not that lightweight, but great value, I'd go for the 35mm reflective :

(I've got the 32mm on the front of my road bike, TBH I'd prefer it to
be less chunky, but can't see that being a problem on a hybrid.)

Off road your Land Cruiser and Kenda should still be better.

* If you haven't, fit the LC to the front and the old front to the
rear. They should work generally much better that way round.

I might go half way and just get another lc for the front. A bit nervous about kenda because of blow out after 170 miles on original rear, but may be useful as a spare. I do spend more of my time on roads primarily due to cycling with club, although commutes are split more evenly.

Hi,

Put the LC on the front and the Kenda on the back, a front blow out is far worse than the back.
The front Kenda should be much less worn than the replaced rear Kenda.

Have the same bike switched from the 45c kenda to Marathon + 32C- excellent puncture protection even on towpaths. The tires are very heavy and it needs a good effort to get rolling, the biggest down side is the much harsher ride comfort, especially on the heavy crossfire- I've gone back to the original 45c for winter and it's like riding on a stage coach on the bumpy tow paths. The kendas for me are fine, - curious why it wasn't replaced like for like in the first place. Best to just wear down what you have and look to change to a 33-37c tyre in the future to tackle most terrains with a decent turn of speed.
