I have a set of Hope pro 2 Hubs on my son's Ragley build (140mm AM build) Lovely to look at and listen to.

Google Hope Hoops wheelsets, you can get them with a variety of rims, most common being Mavic or DT Swiss XC or AM rims. If you're lucky you'll find Stans Crest or Flow rims for the same money.

Expect to pay between £240 and £300 for a pair of ready built wheels, depending on where you get them from. . The £587 pricetag you saw must have been a pretty exotic build!

The freewheel is NOISY and very reassuring. It is, supposedly bombproof, though you do hear of the occasional cracked hub, but Hope after-sales is jealous of the company's reputation. Easy to service, easy to swap out the bearings if necessary. The loud clicking is marmite though!

There are other comparable wheelsets out there, such as FSA, Fulcrum, Mavics. I have a pair of Superstar Superleggera on an XC bike, which have a higher pitched buzzing freewheel like a jar full of wasps, but is still reassuringly noisy!

Yes. Loads of LBS will have a wheelbuilder. Last quote I got was about 25 quid to build.

Just a word of caution. Dependant upon size of hub you may end up needing new spokes as I found out when my OEM DT Swiss Hub gave up the ghost. It ended up being easier to get a new wheel. You may be OK but just keep this in mind.

Depending on the size of the flange on your existing hub, if its the same size as a pro II there's a good chance you can use your spokes , I use an online calculator to work out spoke length if i,m building from scratch.

Building wheels just takes practice an patience , once you lace your spokes you should find it quite straightforward if your used to sorting out a buckled wheel , I usually do a basic 3 cross pattern though, copying from an existing wheel.
Plenty of demo.s on u tube if you have the time & fancy building your own as hand built wheels are usually superior to machine built ones .
