Advice needed

I recently sold my road bike and got a mtb so I was able to go with my son (5yo) on grass mud etc.
however I am missing the road bike I have to admit. So I've been looking at cyclocross bikes so I'll have relative speed of a road bike, and still be able to go "off road".
Does anyone have a cyclocross and what are they're thoughts. Also any recommendations for one of these under 500 mark. Thanks

I've a Tricross, great bike. I use 28mm tyres and it will ride over pretty much any surface and is quick enough for me when on the tarmac.
