advice needed

Hi need some advice,my son has come back from a friends house with a bike project which he is intending to build for a school project but not sure its viable so thought i'd get some advice from people who know. My so has bought a bike from a friend (british eagle tulsa...ouch) he got it home thinking it needed a tyre on inspection we discovered loads of faults, needs new wheels,brake levers well not hard,problem is the back mech which is hanging off no bolts attaching to the frame to get to the point can i get a new back mech with hanger and bolts to attach it or are the bolts used a specific diameter to the frame? if they are a specific diameter not sure where to get them from any ideas? as its a school project don't mind putting money in but not going to spend massive amounts if the repairs need more than the bikes worth any ideas? thanks.

You can get cheap Shimano shifters with a hanger (non detachable) for around a tenner or hanger plates for a couple of quid but they are tapped to take the hanger and the bolt is specific to the purpose.

ah tyfound them thanks for advice, looking for another project now to strip for parts as may be a better idea than buying everything new, and looks like back mech is broken anyway
