How can I adjust the height of the handlebars on this bik? Do I just use a wrench on the nut? Thanks.

I think that might be a quill stem - see here

once again Sheldon to the rescue

oh if you mean ther nut in the photo and it is a quill stem - that nut is for the headset itself - only need to touch this if servicing the headset will not affect handlebar height - that is assuming its a quill stem......

I prised off that oval-shaped bung in the picture above and there's a hex nut in there about 1.5inches down. Do you use that for adjusting the height of the stem?

probably.

If you prise that rubber cap off the top of the stem there will either be a bolt head or an hex socket. Undo it a few turns, then give it a sharp smack with a hammer. (you may need to use a drift of some sort to reach the bolt head). This will release the wedge inside the steering head. Once released you will be able to raise or lower the bars as you want them. Once adjusted and pointing straight ahead then firmly tighten the bolt and replace the rubber cap.

There may be a mark on the stem which will warn of maximum height. Be sure not to pull the bars up too high.

Yes. Slacken the nut then with a piece of wood (to prevent damage to the nut) and a hammer knock the bolt down. Slacken some more and knock down till the stem can be rotated. Adjust to correct height and tighten. Job done.
