Adjustable fork 'handlebar frame stem.

Hello.
Please has any one an opinion re. replacing the stem that goes from the frame to the handlebars (maybe it is called the fork stem ? )
I am having problems with sore wrists and suspect if I could raise the handle bars about one inch it may help ,that is give me a more relaxed riding position .
The bike is a racer /roadster with drop handlebars .
I generaly only hold the top flat bit ,not the droped part.

I assume that it is a threadless headset, and the stem is clamped to the fork steerer (the top tube that goes from the fork through the frame and ibot the stem), are there any spacers above the stem, if yes you can move them to be below the stem, this will lift the stem, however if you want to move it up by an inch you will probably have to consider other options, the obvious one is new stem with a steeper angle.

This link will show you the difference between a threaded and threadless headset, the picture of the threadless one shows all the spacers below the stem, you may have some above. You may have to scroll down until you come to headsets.
