When I try to take a spacer from below my bars and lower the bar the spacer won't sit properly to the same depth as it was below plus I am unable to compress the bearings sufficiently with the spacer on top although there should be no real change in dimensions if it's on top or below , am I missing something

Puzzle game procrastinator!
What do you mean by "won't sit properly"?

(You do know that the top of the spacer should sit slightly above the top of the steerer, not level with it?)

Can you post a pic please.

You should always tighten the top cap before you tighten the stem bolts.

Hi guys just to clarify if I take one spacer from underneath the bars and place it over the now petruding post above the bars , when I try and screw down the top cap it doesn't compress the bearings enough

Is the star fangled washer (which the top cap screws into - is it too near the top ? - you might have pulled this up.

Before you take put on the top cap, is there still a couple of mm that the spacer sits above the steerer tube ?

You need to workout out why , the single spacer must be sitting not as proud of steerer tube as stem is when arranged other way round. So why is that , that’s what you need to look at.

Yes but there's a clear gap but I can full tighten down the top cap screen and there is loads of play in the bearings
