Hi, I'm currently bidding on a couple of racing bikes on Ebay. Some of them have dual brakes and some don't. The bike I fancy doesn't have dual. Do you know if it's easy (and expensive) to add them?

Cheers,

Jim.

Not expensive. It was being discussed somewhere else earlier this week - you can get a set of Veloce dual pivot brakes for £27.

do you mean dual levers?

I've thought about adding them a couple of times but never bothered as I don't think i'll need them

there are two options for levers that can be grabbed when holding the flat part of the bar or on the curve of the bar.

these are the old style extension lever which bolts onto the normal lever.
these can make it uncomfortable to ride with your hand on the top of the brake lever (normal position)

recently bikes are being fitted with cross levers that bolt independently to the main lever but pulling on the same cable, these allow hands to be positioned where you choose.

I was thinking of the latter. I've heard bad things about the 'suicide' breaks.

I'll ride my bike for a few weeks first to see if I need them or not. I'll be using drop-bars for the first time since I was about 12 and I'm expecting it to be a big change to my current flat-bar hybrid. I just thought it would be nice to occasionally ride with my hands on the top of the bar and so would need brakes there. Also, my workmate bought a cyclocross bike with them on and I like the look of them.

There is no need for duel brake levers on a road bike. Get a good set of duel pivot brakes and levers and you'll feel far more in control on the road than with cantilever brakes paired with those levers.

The additional levers come into their own when braking on very steep off-road descents / if you're not flexable enough to use the standard STI levers.
