A friend of mine had a old Raleigh Cyclone mountain bike lying in his garage which he was throwing out so I took it off his hands just so I could potter on and hone my mechanical skills( they are limited to say the least) but eager to learn. It has a five speed rear free wheel but no hanger for a derallieur. I have heard mentioned somewhere of a adaptot claw that you can fasten the derallieur to, any one heard of these. The dropouts have no holes in to bolt anything to it. As I say it is only a learning curve and wont be spending lots of money just a challenge really. Thanks in advance.

What you need is a gear hanger or you could fit one of those nasty cheap shifters shown above. A gear hanger will allow the fitting of any rear mech of your choice. ( they're also sometimes known as hanger plates)
