Had my first ever acupuncture session today. It was via work with a person who specialises in Chinese medicine. Started with some prodding and poking in my back to find the problem areas, then a massage. Let's say my left side of my spine is buggered. The therapist said oh heck a few times at the tightness in the left side (this is associated with my shoulder).

After that she did some cupping which didn't half release the tension and my physio had a check too. Next came the acupuncture and had eight needles, one in each ankle, 4 in my back, one in the neck and one in my left arm. This was left in 15 mins. Neck and scapula felt much better after, and I had much increased movement. Will see how the nerve pain goes down.

Good side is I've been told to eat more, especially protein to help muscle recovery. She also asked what cycling I was doing and asked had I thought of cutting it down. WTF, she saw my face. I said I wanted to do more. Then came the thing about eating enough. Obviously my energy flows are a bit knackered. Cake anyone ?

Was a bit dubious about the benefits, but my physio proposed that he include acupuncture as part of my treatment for pretty serious achilles injury from running. I had tried lots of other treatments to no avail, but he had me sorted. I don't know how much was down to the acupuncture, but his overall treatment worked wonders and changed my perception.

Getting told to eat more by a health professional is almost worth getting knocked off your bike for.
I'll put you on my diet for a few weeks, soon have you bulking up a bit :hungry:

Well next morning - slept a little better, neck had loads more movement (easily turn round on bike), and nerve pain has certainly lessened.

Muscles on the top of my left shoulder are killing - most likely due to the cupping releasing some of the tension.

Next session in about 3 weeks.

Need to find some good protein sources over and above meat, eggs and cheese.

Go and see a chiropractor to sort the root of the problem, physios do a great job for rehab, etc, but can sometimes focus on symptomatic relief, which can end up being a long term thing.

There was a great article in the comic recently here

Please note I am not a chiropractor (just a happy customer) and not connected in any way to the the foregoing. I see one regularly, think of it like a dental check up (you shouldnt wait for toothache to see the dentist, why should the rest of your body be different ?)

I hope you get well soon.

Scrambled eggs are good.
Salmon. Nuts.
But not all at the same time.

Tried a course of acupuncture a few years ago. About forty five minutes of nice relaxing music, a good rest and some soothing massage; all very enjoyable; even the acupuncture needles weren't particularly a problem. As to all this providing a reduction in the back and knee discomfort the treatment was intended for? Little or no difference I'm afraid, although it did take pounds off my wallet!

Not saying acupuncture doesn't work, it just seem to for me; I'm sure there are plenty out there who swear by its benefits.
