Am recovering from it since IM just over 2 weeks ago and so thought id cycle to work this morning just to get a bit of fitness and keep the ankle mobile. Trouble is within about 30 mins it came back. I never thought cycling would aggravate it if im honest. Anybody else found this ?

Hmm I have had it but not through cycling. I have to be honest I have never had a muscle strain of any kind through cycling!!!! But I had suffered from it playing football. Unfortunately as you probably know the blood supply in that area is very low making healing a very slow process. I would stay of footy for 6 months and it would still come back.

You probably don't want to stay of the bike this long but I had to give up football for a whole year, only doing stair stretches and no running. Rest seems to be the only cure if this is a recurring problem.
GWS soon.

Have you been diagnosed with tendinitis? it could possibly be a strain. When suffering with it myself, I used ice and shoes with decent arch support. One day I woke up and it wasn't there anymore

Cheers. Am icing and taking NSAID. I just found it strange that it came back whilst on bike as I always thought cycling was good for recovering from these things

Yes, it is dependant completely on the angle of my foot on the pedal and how far up or down my toes are....
Easing up on yourself helps and not pushing things to hard obviously. Mine flares up from time to time with mild occurrences only ever triggered by cycling. I just ride through it, adjusting the angle of my foot on the pedal. Ironically I only ever get it on the side that didn't have the torn Achilles tendon as a teenager, go figure.

Mine took 12 months to subside, brought on by walking, not cycling,

Bending to a crouch brought on incredible pain but I then found I could spin cycle without that much ill effect.

Was just about to post a thread on this when I saw this one.
I've just been diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis myself and whilst its absolutely fine whilst cycling it is then almost unbearable about an hour after and the next day. My wife is a physio and doing some good exercises with me but it seems to be getting worse not better. The doctor did say it could take up to six months to heal and advised me to take some time off work which I'm not and that cycling would actually be beneficial as it is a form of physio.
I guess time is going to be the only healer

Worth noting that I did not use cleats so was able to adjust my feet for the most comfort.

This injury was the bane of my life for around 18 months whilst I was a fairly serious runner,
IME it is a condition that you have to be proactive with, rest alone will not cure it, as mentioned above, stair raises, massage, ultra sound, ice, all have their place as do heel wedges & ankle braces.
Unfortunately, be prepared for the long haul & plenty of work, but it will get better......... eventually, best of luck

I've had it twice in the same ankle about 15 years apart, both times physio didn't help but acupuncture did. The 2nd occurrence I had 18 months of physio with no improvement, I went to a private acupuncture clinic, I hobbled in, 90 minutes later I was able to walk out, one more visit and my ankle has been fine for the past 10 years

Guess you are a runner. Cycling shouldn't affect it but it's been injured running. It won't help cycling on it.

You do know running is for losers ^_^

I had/have a lump in my Achillies that became painful. I visited one physio that did some acupuncture that did absolutely nothing. I went to another physio who turned out to be something of a specialist in cycling. He gave me a couple of exercises to do and told me that the cycling would help and that if I had come in as a runner he'd advise me to take up cycling!
Over time the lump decreased but has never totally gone. My phisio told me that this would be one possible outcome and that it could just be something I need to manage. When I feel the lump is increasing or my calves feel tight I do the heel drop exercise until it settles down.

I have no real trouble with it now, but I do keep an eye on it.

Over the years I've had trouble with both Achilles tendons, the right was cured with steroid injections, not sure of the cause, the left has been ongoing for the last 18 month or so, think the cause was excessive walking. I've only just returned to cycling and feel little or no pain in the affected tendon whilst cycling. Been backwards & forwards to see doctor & had 4 steroid injections which have had no positive effect, referred recently to specialist who diagnosed Tendinopathy and put me on a 3 month course of physio, heel raise & lower and 2 types of calf/tendon stretches. Initially seemed to be working, less pain & only slight limp but since increasing exercises it's back to being pretty painful again:cry:, but I'm still able to cycle pain free, in the words of Toyah............. it'th a mythtery
