Hi all,
I bought a 20inch boys bike from a well knonw store, once the guy had given the bike a safety inspection off I toddle off home and give the bike a once over myself.
Well the front wheel wouldnt spin one revolution before sticking....I opened the brakes enough so it would...resulting in the lever coming all the way to the grip. In my opinion that isnt safe.
nyway took the bike back and asked for it to be trued under warranty....after a load of flannel from the mechanic he took the wheel off the bike and onto the jig stating that 1mm wobble each side is sufficient under manafec...blah blah.
I stated the lever situation and I deem it unsafe, he said he'd give it a go trueing it but he doubted it would improve or swap for one of the others in store(I checked with him they were all like that).
After the manager got involved the result is....he's going to give it a go but stated the same again(doubt they'd be improvement) or refund the money.....I said I'd get it trued elsewhere(decent bike shop) and charge them for the job for not producing a bike fit for purpose if they dont fix it......fair for a brand new bike?
I'm not naming and shaming yet as they've got a chance to fix it...

Technically he's right in that it meets European standards if it's true to within 2mm (or 4mm for disc braked wheels ).

However, any bike shop worth their salt wouldn't let it go out that wobbly as a professionally trued wheel should be within 0.2mm. (Feels smug that on my Cytech course I got it better than 0.05mm.;))

The actual problem appears to be your brakes. The lever is not properly compatible with them, pulling too much cable. Are they V-brakes or cantilevers?

Truing a wheel to less than a mm is dependent on the quality of the components.

Vee, child size levers.....I would have thought pulling more cable would be desired then the pads could be set further away from the rim...?

I thought thats what you meant, I'd go with the assumtion that the parts would/should be matching ref the levers......as for the quality then I'd go with in that case it isnt fit for purpose.
I'll see when its done....or not done as the case may be.

Ok, picked the bike up today.
Surprisingly the wheels are true ish....I'm sure if I took them a proper bike shop I'd get proper service.
Thanked the mechanic for taking the time to look at it and had no response...nothing. Ignorant surly muppet....ontop of that the brakes weren't setup properly.
However I wanted straighter wheels and that's what I got.
I'll name the shop as I wasn't asked for any details or who I was, simply "hi I've come to pickup my lads bike".....oh over there m8, that's when the mechanic turned up.....decathlon Stockport....won't buy from there again!!!!
