My neice is turning 3 next week, and my sister has sent me an email asking me for recommendations for bicycles because I'm into bicycles so surely I'd know all about what kind of bike would be suitable for a three year old. *facepalm*

So for a joke, does anyone know of any ridiculously expensive childrens bicycles out there? Some kind of £3k+ Carbon or Ti kids scooter? Surely such a thing must exist?

Actually balance bikes as they are known are a fantastic way for kids to get to grips with the aspect of staying upright.

My son went straight from a balance bike to a proper bike with no stabilisers and one look at the local parks would tell you these are becomming more and more popular.

Sorry to the op not really much help but I wouldnt class a balance bike as overpriced and a waste of money as montyveda suggests.

The like-a-bike to me is a stupendous waste of money... how long will it be before the 'young rider' will want a proper bike with pedals and stuff? A week? A month?

I think many kids get a good year out of them, and can manage one well before they could cope with a bike. They do continue to be fun, even once the balance aspect is learned. Also, get a good one, and look after it (and there's not too much to maintain on one), and it'll retain a large proportion of it's value for resale (or endless handing down).

I think the byword for good kid's bikes is Islabike - everything from the achingly cute Rothan up to proper roadbikes with properly scaled components for the older ones

You could try not being such a grump. Be flattered they asked. Plenty of people would assume they knew best and end up buying something dreadful with oversized brake levers, unnecessary heavy suspension and gears a kid just can't understand at that age. Instead they've thought "oh, this is an important thing, we better ask someone who knows about bikes" After all, one question on here, and you'll get all the advice you need and can go back to them looking every inch the expert.

I think you may have an incorrect impression as to my families dynamics and how I feel about this particular case, and I feel a bit perturbed being in a situation where I'm having to explain that to a stranger.

I thought it would be funny, that's all.
