I posted a thread a few weeks ago about achieving a milestone of climbing up Alsagers Bank which is the high point of Cheshire. I was so chuffed with this that I stupidly bragged to my nephew who is a very keen cyclist and covers around 100-miles each week average. He does sportive's etc and thinks nothing of doing 80-mile rides. I have just achieved the 20-mile milestone ....... there's also 25-years between us.

He's just bought a new Colnago frame and thought he would drive up and stay with me this weekend, so that we can do Mow Cop and Alsagers Bank!!!!!

Does anyone know which is the biggest climb of the 2? I may also need a really good illness so that I can just give him my map and ask him to tell me how it went

Don't know Alsagers Bank but Mow Cop is a mile long. It's only steep just before the top next to the pub, where it looks like its vertical. That section is about 100 meters long and can catch you out if not prepared. That's the bit that gets lots of folk falling off and walking on the Cheshire Cat.

Alsagers Bank is 1.3 miles so slightly longer, and there is a huge ramp for the last half mile, but not sure if it's 23% like the last ramp of Mow Cop. I watched plenty of videos on You Tube of the Mow Cop climb, as it seems to be popular for cyclist from all over. Alsagers Bank is obviously not as well known, but also has its own problems with parked cars which turns it into single track for cars, which can force cyclists to stop and wait or go on the pavement to avoid traffic.

Both have a nice pub though, and to be fair a great downhill where you don't need to use your rubber legs for a while

Hope you don't mind me making a few edits to make it fit in with my reality!

IMO the best way to ride Mow Cop is on a motor bike.I've owned cars that couldn't get up it.
I've conquered Alsager's Bank solo & on a tandem.No problem.
I've failed Mow Cop more than once.No chance.

My son had that!
I have it.

I have it.
I had it in my mid teens and it stopped me doing games lessons for my last two years at school  Grew out of it eventually which was exactly what the docs said would happen.

Best mate had it too, (we're both very tall which is apparently most common for getting it). He ignored docs warnings, carried on playing basketball and subsequently snapped his knee

My son was diagnosed at age 15.
It stopped him doing PE for a while, and yes, he's a good 6ft!
He seems fine now.

Well yesterday we went out and did Alsagers Bank and to be fair I managed to get up without stopping, so really chuffed. Today we went to attempt Mow Cop and we really screwed it up by going in the wrong way. We followed the wrong road in because we went for the level crossing south of the one we aimed for, simply because we followed a sign for Mow Cop!!. Into the wind and started a massive climb that was bursting my lungs and had me swearing, but I got up it and was really chuffed but discovered we were in Mount Pleasant, which meant we would need to hang a left and head for the real place and start the climb again. We bailed out after viewing Mount Pleasant and its relationship to Mow Cop because doing MC after MP is too much for me. In the last 2-days I've done almost 700 meters and that's good enough for an old newbie, I'll have another look at MC in the future
