A4 or Sustrans: Calne -> Avebury section

What does the panel think about the best route on a weekday (early pm), cycling from Calne to Avebury, or, 'how bad is the A4 these days' I suppose? I've seen old reports that the sustrans track is pretty dire / rough / convoluted / possibly lots of water. On 35mm tyres.

I live nearby. I’ve done it but didn’t love it! It’s fine as far as Cherhill but from Cherhill to the Yatesbury turn off, it’s fast! It’s wide but fast. A cyclist died there recently!

The sustrans track is fine on a touring bike but not on a road bike.

If you’re not in a hurry going via Allington and Alton Prior is nice. Via
Clyffe Pypard is also good, but Clyffe is well named….

I just did Calne to Cherhill on the A4 in the end; it was fine. Then 403 through Avebury, to pick up the Ridgeway through Barbury castle to Ogbourne, etc
