Maybe this has been covered before, but.....

I bought one of these about 10 years ago when I started motorbiking it to work.

It's an outdoors stick on thermometer which I put on the outside of my bedroom window. I check it every morning as it's pretty difficult to guess how cold (or warm) it is from inside a heated house.

Of course, it's not all down to temperature, as wind/rain/moisture in the air (fog makes a massive difference) can alter how cold it actually feels, but I do find it really helpful to have a 'ballpark' figure to work on.

Cool - I look up BBC weather - there's a weather station only a few miles away, so its generally close enough.

I got my parents a giant outdoor thermometer as a present to stick on their garden wall. Its okay at times, but its very badly affected by sunlight. It will record 40+ at about 15. I suppose thats why they say a temperature and then add 'in the shade.'

I have a thermometer on the garden wall oposite my study window (where my bike and kit live) - it's in the shade and a couple of feet away from the house so gives a reasonably good idea of temp. The amount of times I've stepped outside (from a nice, warm bed), thought "Not too bad" then regretted a lack of clothing on the bike made me go for a slightly more technical option.

if I don't put the guinea pigs out then a quick step out the front door tells me not only temperature but rain, sniff for rain and feel the wind, must take seconds

and I like to give a slightly eccentric appearance to the neighbours

I'm too lazy to go and check. I put my bike gear on before I go downstairs and I need to know whether to thermal up or not. Plus, if it's below zero degrees, I know to put my skull cap on to protect my baldy head.

I must admit to getting dressed downstairs so i do not wake up my wife + kid , it means i have a selection of cycle clothes that i can pick from dependent on what the weather is like .

In the hall, we have a device which has a sensor outside and tells you the outside temperature. It also tells you in the inside temperature and has a radio-controlled clock on it. It can tell you the minimum temperature overnight if you set it properly. Jolly useful !

Wouldn't be without one now, we have a weather station with an outdoor sensor [in the shade] that gives us temp, pressure, humidity [very useful] radio controlled clock and even a weather forecast. Look out for them in Aldi, about £18 I recall, had ours years and like I said would be lost without it because we know exactly what to wear on the bike. They make great presents too.
