Hi again.
A few weeks back at work my office suddenly become engulfed in a lovely aroma of smelly old fish. The smell was absolutely disgusting ,and I spent an age hunting high and low trying to track it down. After a couple of days I was getting comments from work colleagues about it, when they would pop in to my office.
To be honest it was starting to get a little embarrassing as i starting wonder if they thought it was me!!.
After a few more days it mysteriously disappeared again and I thought no more of it. For the next few weeks it would come and go for brief moments and as it was exceptionally busy with the run up to Christmas I just ignored it and made light of the matter to whoever came into my office when the smell was evident.
Today the mystery was solved in quite a dramatic manor.
Behind my desk I have got a mass of computer/ printer wires etc all tucked away out of site. One of the many electrical devises I have was an electric fan heater. Today it stopped working dead in its tracks and as I went to unplug it I noticed the whole plug had melted into a charred mess. Before I touched it I isolated all the power before teasing it out of it socket. I could instantly smell this vile smell of fish on it ,and quickly deduced this was the cause of it. After getting the electrician in to do a safety check, he told me that the old bakelite insulators in plugs etc always give off thus pungent smell when there is a bad connection that in turn causes the insulation to over heat and burn. The plug was badly melted as was well as the socket.
So ,just a cautionary tale to share tonight with you good fellow members. If you have an unexplained smell of fish in your home ,check all your plugs and sockets for the source or any evidence of electrical issues.
You may be surprised.
All the best .
Johnny.

People of a certain age would have known that whiff the minute they first got the smell.

Where I work, legend has it that a kid left a whole salmon in a locker over the summer holidays as a prank. Only in Harrogate could a 16 year old afford a whole salmon!

It often happens when wires are loose in shower ceiling switches..especially cheap B&Q types
You smell it after the shower..

Years ago at work, one of the lads put a piece of steak in the heater inlet of his colleagues car, spent ages trying to trace the smell!.

Also a packet of TUC biscuits dropped down the back of a fridge (nice and warm) makes a pretty vile smell, took ages to find that one!.

I know of mechanic who put a fillet of mackeral into the heater unit of a car belonging to a customer who always complained about everything and more often than not refused to pay...
We had a right nobber know all at college who got on everyone's tits.
We shoved a large gob of grease up the inside of the 'silencer' on his Triumph Tiger 100, using a piece of dowel, one lunchtime.
Once it got up to heat, it smoked like a battleship on an evasive manoeuvre!
He was tearing his hair out trying to figure what was wrong with it. Even stripped the top end down, had it rebored, new pistons etc. It still smoked for a while after, before eventually burning it all out.
My how we larfed!

A pity you did not post about the fishy smell before.I could have sorted that out.We had the same smell in our hall cupboard. Then one Friday night before work, bang flash wallop.A fireworks display from the electric box in same cupboard. What a noise and sight.I flipped the switch took the wife and kids next door and called out The Y.E.B.It had overheated,a connection had non been done right when we had some work done by the Y.E.B some years before.
