I use Bio-Freeze gel, can get it in a roll on too, which make applying it easy & saves getting it under your fingers nails, which may get missed when washing your hands & then you rub your eyes
Might not be a muscle "strain", might be a tear, or worse, tendon damage. I thought I had a "strain" but am now incapacitated for 6 months+, if it's there more than day, go and see your doctor.

You read my post, I thought I had a strain, I only took advantage of the hospital because my mother (very fortunately ) broke her hand and she needed a lift. If she hadn't have done so, I might still be at home now, with a "sprain" no better and an arm on it's way to being permanently handicapped.
Go to A&E, you might wait a bit but you'll get professional advice and attention.
