Could it indicate a problem in the headset or the hub?

Every time my front wheel rotates it sounds as though a tiny flap is slapping against the fork crown or some really sticky chewing gum is stuck to the tyre.

Apologies for the mystery sound thread but any ideas? It developed on a long-ish hilly ride yesterday and was worse during the commute today. It's in time with the wheel rotation and only happens when I'm riding (not just spinning the wheel). If I'm turning left the noise stops, if I turn right it gets louder. The wheel runs true and there is no rubbing on the brake blocks. There are no muguards and it continues when I freewheel.

And there's no chewing gum stuck to the tyre!

Cheers.

Cheers Ian. Your suggestion led me to pay closer attention to the tyre and I've cracked it. For information it seems the layers of my Specialized All Condition have come unstuck from each other. There's a 'bubble' between the rubber casing and presumably the puncture protection strip inside. With each revolution this six inch long anomoly would press against the road and make a sticking sound. Phew, I'm relieved. Should be able to get a replacement in the morning
