The rear mech on my Viking is absolute pants,i'll get the gears set up spot on but after 20-30 miles or so i cant get through them all,it seems as though the barrell bolt works itself loose.
Please can you advise me of a half decent Shimano compatible rear mech, preferably in black and long cage for £50 ish please?

I just bought an Alivio rear derailleur from CRC with 33% off, down to £19.99.

A nice solid piece of equipment at a very reasonable price, if it suits your shifters and number of speeds.

The spacing will be wrong, which is why the gears aren't shifting properly, unless you've changed it?

Are you sure that it isn't the high/low stops that are incorrectly adjusted?

no mate, when i re-adjust the rear mech on the work stand i get all the gears spot on,spend 10 mins or so just peddaling and shifting and get it spot on,then i get out on the road and after a few miles the shifting starts slowing between 2nd-1st and 6th-7th until in the end it just wont go into them.It was a cheap bike in a box and the components are cheap tatt too, have replaced brakes etc and now i really need to get shot of the rear mech, its so frustrating.

Ok, well I'd maybe start by trying some Loctite on the threads of the adjusting bolts. If that doesn't work, then go about changing the rear mech.

Remember that 10 speed indexed shifters won't work with a 7 speed cassette, as the spacing between each cog is different on a 7 speed in comparison to a 10 speed. You could always upgrade the cassette to 10 speed though if you have shifters for it.

Unfortunately not. The more speeds on a freewheel, the longer it has to be, which puts more forces on the bearings situated at one end of the freewheel - Hence why they stopped producing freewheel style gears as the number of speeds increased.

You will need to upgrade to a freehub rear wheel to use a 10 speed cassette.

To run a 10 speed cassette you'll need something like this, for £39.99 from eBay - Or a higher quality model, £59.99 from CRC.

Edit: Actually, that first link appears to be for up to 9 speed.. The second link doesn't state a number of speeds, so someone with experience of the wheel may want to comment on that.
