Sheldon says that the centre-to-centre spacing of the sprockets is different, 4.8mm for eight speed, and 4.34mm for 9 speed.

As far as I can see you need JTEK Shift Mate model #2 to make it work.

Are you gonna go for it? SJS cycles is the place for getting a JTEK Shift Mate in the UK.

They're a bit expensive, but quick and easy (assuming they work well).
Not this time. I'm going to change the shifter instead. Just found an old one that is an 8 speed so it seems the best way to go. I'll probably get a couple of shift adjusters though as they do look like a good solution if buying a 9 speed sti shifter is too expensive.

Having said that I've just seen the price. Good lord. It is possible though that I can get them from my wholesale supplier. They don't stock them but might get them in.
