i have been offered some very cheap 10 spd dura ace shifters from a club mate who has only used them once, i'm just wondering if they will still work with a 9 spd cassette until that is worn out as it does not need replacing at the moment. the reason i need the new shifter is that my current LH shifter has broken and it just seems sensible to upgrade whilst i have the chance.

Hard to say, looking at cassette spacings - 4.34mm on 9 spd, 3.95 on 10 speed.

With different cassettes to shifters, normally adjust rear changer so middle sprocket is lined up with changer jockey wheels, and absorb differences in derailleur travel/cassette spacing up and down from there.

In this case, you would be 1.6mm short of travel on top and btm sprockets, so it might be a bit toss (sorry to start gettin all technical;)).

Hopefully somebody will post who has actually tried it.

Ive got campag 9 spd shifters on a shimano 9 spd cassette which gives 0.8mm too much travel each way at extremes. Its OK but not perfect, which makes me think your combo may not work.

Google "Sheldon Brown" for website with all this exciting info on.

I think the simple answer is No.
As SimonC says, the indexing will be out by too much for the floating top jockey to cope with.

cant you get your 9spd back on warrenty?

technically yes but i dont really trust the shop to get it done quickly, for example it took them six weeks to get me my road shoes 6 WEEKS, and i'd paid in advance too- i need a working bike this week not in september ;)

Sounds like your best option to me mate - if you run the 10sp shifter on a 9sp cassette then as well as poor shifting you also risk knackering your chain!

Personally, I'd get the shifters anyway and then swap over once I'd got a 10sp cassette to match (not too sure on Shimano kit but you might also have issues with mis-matched shifter/rear gear?)

Errrr.....
I'd get the shifters and try Sheldon Brown's alternate cable routing trick. With a bit of experimentation I reckon you could get the shifter to work.

This WILL NOT work. Stupid idea doomed to failure.

However, I have a use for them. Get everyone out of a very difficult situation and sell them to me.

You can run a 10-speed setup by just replacing the shifter, cassette and chain.

The simple and correct answer is that it wont work very well! 2 options, buy new cassette and chain or get different shifters (9spd)
