I picked up this mid 90's Giant CFR3 today off Gumtree, the components were rough but the frame was what I was after. The right size (61cm), light and rigid it looked like a good basis for a hill climbing bike.
Before:
It had an RSX groupset (that was not in great condition), mismatched wheels (rear original, front a replacement) but good seat and bars and that frame.
I stripped it down, cleaned the frame up and worked out what I was going to do with it.
Most of the components ended up being replaced by spares I had-
-Mavic Aksium Race wheels
- New Maxxis Re fuse 700 x 25 tyres
- 105 rear derailleur
- 105 downtube shifters (front lever a dummy)
- Shorter, higher quill stem
- Aero brake levers
- polished RSX brakes from another project
I added a new 28-12 cassette (to go with the 42 tooth front) and new chain, new bar tape and cables and ended up with this:
A quick ride around the garage confirms it's light and responsive, and the Aksium's are a good match for the frame.
The carbon weave and deep purple make a great combination too. I'm looking forward to it's first outing.
