9 speed chainset with 10 speed chain.........

Hi, I am currently updating my Tommasini Super Prestige to 10 speed. I'm wanting to get a nice carbon chainset for it but they cost a fortune, so was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to run a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed chainset??

Shouldn't cause any problem. It's the back end that's more critical.

Yes a 10spd chain will do nicely on 9 speed as the inner gap stays more or less the same and outer width is shaved a fraction to accommodate the narrower cassette.

It was my dad's bike but he gave it to me when I wanted to start cycling again. It will be a campag veloce 10speed groupset for now, with a Centaur rear mech, ITM bars and stem, campag record seat post, a selle san marco rolls saddle and a pair of fsa wheels I got half price! A few years back he had it resprayed. Not sure why because it looked amazing the way it was. Think it was because he couldn't be bothered with all the chrome! But I'm trying to save up enough money to get it back to it's original paint job, with the chrome, and hopefully a carbon groupset. I would love record, but that's silly money! It was a bit like this one but the frame was slightly darker and the grey bits before the Tommasini transfers were pink. It was beautiful!!

Really that bike should have a C-Record groupset (v expensive now!) - presumably it is a late 80's to early 90's - but if you are riding it then you might as well have all the mod cons available.

There is quite a big Retro scene - these bikes were "modernised" by a respray and updated gear in the 90's and now people are re-spraying them back to the original state and collecting the original components.

PS -The modern Ultra Torque chainsets are IMHO a lot better to use than the old square taper based cranks but they don't look as good.
