As the title says would this work well?
Seen some cheap claris rings online but they are described as 8 speed, Are they cheap for a reason?

It will work. Have a look at Ribble for the Stronglight Dural chainrings. Very good replacement chainrings at a decent price. Or you could bling it with Zircal ones.

First child due in ten weeks so I'm trying to save where I can. Dilemma is just bought a giant ocr as a winter bike, its an old one but ultegra groupset, drivetrain is pretty much shot, do I just ride it till death then transfer my rings, chain and cassette from my better bike in a few months and spend money on that or replace these worn bits on the giant cheaply?

Plus one to the Stronglight Durals, at £22 for both (and 9sp eg Ribble). If the chainwheels are shot, you'll do your chain no favours by continuing to ride on them.

I've just ordered an eight speed triple to replace the stock chainset on my nine speed setup. I don't anticipate any problems as I've previously run 10 speed with a nine speed chainset on one bike and vice versa on another.
