Hi Guy's, I have been offered a triple chainset for my bike but it has come from a 7 speed mountain bike. My Gryphon is the 9 speed model so am I right in thinking the rings will be too thick for the chain?

No problem with respect to chain (7 and 9 speed chains have the same internal gap). However the chance of a random chainset having the same bottom bracket spindle system, and delivering the same chainline as your old chainset with your existing bb is, eh, not good, so you might want to check that. Also if the large rings of the two chainsets are different in tooth count, or large/medium ring tooth difference are different then your front mech might not like the new chainset and you might need to change chain/length. I am assuming the two chainsets don't have very different tooth range and therefore rear mech capacity is not an issue.

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting the bottom bracket with it and have a multitude of mechs lying around so no issue there. I was just concerned about the internal width of the chain compared to the teeth of the rings. I'll be going from a 34/50 compact double to a 22/32/42 triple to help carry my immense carcass up the steep ones which I avoid.

Thanks again for the advice!
