So, will a 9 speed chain work 'well' with a 7 speed freewheel and shifters?

I'd expect it to work, but not change down (to larger sprockets) quite as well as 7 speed chain would.
It's narrower on the outside, so the derailleur will have to move a little further before the chain snags the next sprocket.

Will work fine.............
I use a 9 speed Dura Ace chain on my 8 speed Dura Ace system, and it actually works better.....causes less chain rub up front.....
On 7 speed, the spacing difference is 0.1mm from 7 to 8 and I even use 8 speed spacers on my 7 speed bikes, so go for it.
If you have a choice, just get a KMC X series 8 speed chain rather than the extra cost of a 9 speed chain. If you already have a 9 speed chain, then use it.

I had a full 7 speed set up but I've replaced some parts now with new 9 speed stuff eg. deore rear mech and chainset.
I was thinking about renewing the chain and thought a 9 speed might be best as I'm using the new chainset and rear mech. Unfortunately, the 7 speed cassette is actually a freewheel type so upgrading the entire system would require a new rear hub (or whole new rear wheel) so I'm putting that off until the wheel is in need of replacement which could be years (better start jumping off kerbs). 9 speed shifters are also pricey. Still I think it's abetter idea than replacing things with more 7 speed items as that is leading nowhere. I do now however, have a bit of a mix and match system of 7 and 9 speed components.
