Simple question. I have a recumbent trike with a 9 speed Shimano cassette. The dérailleur is a Deore long cage and the changer is a 9 speed friction bar end. I'd like to fit an 11-36 10 speed cassette. I know I'll probably need to change the chain to a 10 speed one but do I need to change anything else?

No.

Yes, I'll use the 9 speed friction one for now. I read something about the 10 speed chain falling between the 9 speed triple up front. Is taht likely to be an issue. I'm assuming the cassette wouldn't be happy with a 9 speed chain!

You need to change the shifters, rear mech and chain depending on what system you buy. Indexed
9 speed shifters won't work with 10 speed cassette, and mech won't have the same throw as a 10speed dynasis shifter.

The shifters are friction only bar end changers and I understand that the 10 speed cassette is no wider than a 9 speed. So are you sure I need new shifters?

Not if friction - you won't need new shifters. Shimano mechs all throw the same cable travel (8-9-10) so you only need to match shifters to cassette, but if friction, it will take any. Certainly get a 10 speed chain. It should be OK up front. I run a 9 speed chain on a 7 speed and 8 speed bike - they work just fine.

Thanks for that. Now All I need to do is check that the Deore mech will cope with a 36 tooth large ring on the cassette!

Checked and the dérailleur probably won't cope with the 36 large cog. So I'm thinking to do the job properly with new bar end changers cassette, dérailleur and chain, but not yet!! Close to £200  to do this so after Xmas I'm thinking, and I now know what to ask for!^_^
Meanwhile I've fitted a 9 speed indexed changer in place of the friction one.

You are likely to be ok, in any case you can check quite easily by measuring the clearance between the largest rear cog and the top pulley. For every 2mm you can have an extra tooth, and the clearance can be maximised by adjusting the B screw, See this.

Although you have changed to indexed 9, there is nothing to stop you swapping the largest rear cog on the 9 speed block with a 36T stolen from a 10 speed block. There is a difference in cog thickness, but it is minute.

True. However for flat bars a R770 flat bar road 10 speed shifter will work fine.
