Hi all,
Can you help me?
I've researched this but am still not sure If I can confidently use this particular setup.
Heres the general question: Will a Shimano 8 speed index shifter, 8 speed cassette and 8 speed chain shift correctly when used with a Shimano 9 speed derailleur? In other words is the derailleur just a slave to the shifter providing the the hi/lo stops are set correctly along with the B screw, and will it all index crisply nicely and correctly??
Here are the specific parts I plan to use.
The bike: Edinburgh Co-op Revolution Traveller of approx 2007
Shimano Deore 8 speed indexed thumb bar shifters. (old school)
The chainring: Triple Stronglite 24-34-42 (Spa Cycles own cranks) with matching Deore friction thumb shifter
The cassette: Shimano HG50 or HG51 8 speed. 11-32.
The chain: Either Shimano HG50 8 speed or SRAM PG830 8 speed.
?? The rear mech: 9 Speed Shimano LX Rear Mech Derailleur Long Cage RDT661SGS ??
The front mech: "Shimano Triple" looks like a Shimano FD-2303, which would be the std on Edinburgh Co-op's Revolution Traveller of approx 2007.
Here are the areas of concern to me:
Is the pulley wheel width changed between 8 and 9 speed derailleur? Significant?
Do the 6,7,8, speed and 9 speed versions of Shimano rear derailleurs have the same cable-pull to cage-movement ratio.
I know that when Shimano went to 9 speed, they chose to narrow the chain and narrow the widths between cogs. Did this affect the 9 speed rear mechs?
I *think* the shifter has to match the number of sprockets on the back, but the derailleur doesn't care. Correct or no?
The shops I've called are giving me variable answers on this compatibility question, and I feel someone here can shed light and authority on the topic.
Cheers Gordon.
