i did my first ride today and it came in at 8 miles. Although I didn't time it it was around the half hour mark. As I'm not really into cycling yet and have never followed it, (bought a bike cos it were cheap) I don't know if this is a decent time or not. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

That would be roughtly 16mph, which is very reasonable for a "bimble" and if you're just getting into it don't worry too much about speed and just enjoy the ride. ^_^

What sort of bike have you got, and are you riding to get fit or save on fuel costs, or just because you like it?

Cheers,
Shaun

8 miles each way is my commute, every day.

I average between 25 and 30 minutes depending if I'm bimbling or not.

It's a decent enough effort, for a first ride, it's great!

Well done

That is a decent time for a newbie and some days I don't get above that all the way into work (17 miles) apart from a big downhill. Well done and keep up the good work :okay:

I got a second hand Ridley. Like I say I don't really know much about it. Haha. I mainly got it as a means to get about ie commuting and also getting round nipping to the shop etc.

It was being sold for 100 quid, an after some very brief research I thought sod it I'd buy it.

iv always been into fitness but never really cycled, I'll be doin it more often now though, just hoping the weather holds out for a few more weeks.

It depends on the route just how fast that is, but for comparison, our sightseeing rides are 10mph and that's my typical urban commute speed, whereas local sporty groups start at 13mph and the racing club has groups advertised at up to 24mph average, but that's taking some risks IMO and I think they want you to complete their training before you ride like that.

i did my first ride today <snip> I don't know if this is a decent time or not.

Well done on getting started. £100 for a Ridley sounds like a bargain. If it's your first ride though, forget about your speed and just get used to cycling and build, confidence and bike handling skills.

Enjoy!
