Shocking news of a 79 yo cyclist killed on Thursday on roads near here.

story here

Must have been a fit old boy. He'd have cycled a good 18miles to get to where he was found.

RIP.
The police don't seem to know what happened so I suppose it is feasible that he wasn't actually knocked off his bike. If he was, that's a terrible way to go.

Wharfedale is a lovely place for cycling. I've done a couple of forum rides and audaxes up there in the past year. I hope I can still ride round places like that when I'm 79.

But yes, RIP old cyclist.

I've been searching for updates on this story and just found one (link)...

Wharfedale Observer said:
Leeds hairdresser Howard Silverman, a close friend for more than half-a-century, said: “He was never married and he didn’t have a single member of family left really. The funeral hasn’t been [held] yet because the coroner says what they have to do by law is to advertise in the paper to see if any long-lost relatives come forward.

“I have been a friend of his for 50 years and I don’t know of any relatives.”

Mr Peace, who lived in Bramhope, was 78 when he fell from his bike as he cycled on the B6160 Bolton Abbey to Burnsall road two weeks ago. He died in the Leeds General Infirmary the following day.

Mr Silverman said: “We thought at first he had had an accident, but by talking to the coroner we found out he was cycling and had had a massive stroke. That’s what killed him.”

He said his friend was a very fit man, and a lifelong cyclist, who used to joke when his time was up he wanted to simply fall off his bike in the Dales.

“It is incredible he got what he wanted,” he said.

Gulp - that brings tears to my eyes! What a way to go though - fit and active until the last day of your life then BANG!  I just hope he didn't suffer between the stroke and his death in hospital the next day.

Great shame his life was cut short but kind of nice that he died doing something he enjoyed.

He sounds like he was a real character.

Several 70 plus yr old riders in the CTC club I am in still doing 35 mile rides. One exceptional guy in our club just turned 80 still does long rides and could easilly pass for a 65 yr old.

RIP Mr Peace

Puts a different light on it, 78, stroke, still living an active life and died doing something he enjoyed...I find more cause for celebration than sadness in that tale...though is certainly poignant.

That was my take on it too.

The only thing to beat it would have been to have got home after completing his Dales ride, gone to bed that night with a big smile on his face and died in his sleep.

If I had the choice of cycling until 70 then going through a long, slow decline off the bike until dying in infirmity aged 85, or leading an active, happy cycling life to 78 and then dying suddenly, I know which I'd choose!

Mind you, ideally I'd choose to cycle until I'm 85 and then die suddenly! ;) I met an old rider (early 70s) last year and he told me that one of his clubmates still does the mid-week cafe ride at 85!

long active life and dying doing something you love until the end. It's a great way to go. I knew a guy who died on the golf course. He always said it was how he wanted to go and he did. Like you say it beats a slow decline.

When are you 85? Tell us your plans for your cycling year and we will lie in wait with a Kalashnikov.

"It was what he wanted."
