OK guys, I am new on here and after a bit (ok it might be a lot) of advice.

I used to ride a lot during the 80's , although I never competed, and I had a 12 speed Peugot which got relegated to the shed when I stopped cycling about 16 years ago.

I now want to get back to riding and my first thought was to do up the old iron, which considering the prices I have seen for entry level bikes seems like a better way of getting it past the mrs.

TBH it should clean up ok, but I do want to change the gear set up, it still has the old non indexed tube change stuff, would this be viable and is the stuff available ?

Just ride it. I have pressed my old student bike back into service, it's fine. After a week or two you'll know if it's worth persisting with.

You'll soon get the hang of the downtube shifters again. The most useful upgrade you can make to the gear system imo is actually a very cheap one. Swap the thread on freewheel for a modern Shimano type (~£10 from ebay. The old one can be tricky to take off.). They are designed for slicker shifting and really do change gear so much easier than any of the old French stuff. I just couldn't believe the difference this made to my '70s Pug.

You can get indexed shifters - ebay is probably the cheapest bet. New tyres, tubes, gear and brake cables and a new chain should cover most things...

PS you can still get Peugeot bikes, and I believe they have a new range, one in particular comes in white with the chequered livery - looks 'sort of' like the old bikes (get my drift here..........) it's great what a bit of spit and polish can do  ..............

Other halves don't generally 'notice' when 'things change' so long as the colour doesn't eh...

Unfortunately, my wife has realised the components on my 'old' best bike are all emblazoned with "Dura Ace" and having been subjected to the Tour de France on telly, she has become a bit more aware...... ("oh is that the stuff on your bike....." .... me "erm.....erm....yes dear") ...........so if (big if) I ever turn up with a new bike with said kit, I will be knackered........

Unfotunately two things are likely to prevent a "cunning plan", the wife is fairly astute and one of her favourite stories is of a friend of ours who "upgraded" his Honda 1000 cc motorcycle with one of a similar colour scheme and not only did his wife not notice but she accepted his explanation that the reason the money was still going out of their bank each month was that it was a 5 year hp not the 3 she had initially thought !!!

So i need to have a dig around on Ebay for a shimano freewheel and indexed shifters if I want to change the gear set up.

All I need to do know is get the junk out of the shed so I can get at the bike......

Right finally got it out and gave it a good scrub . After hours of trolling round shops and on the net I am going to do the minimum to get it back on the road, A service at the local shop , tyres and tubes . then see how it goes before i either chuck some money at it or chuck more money at a new one !

I am considering a new saddle (not a particularly expensive ) and some budget / secondhand SDS pedal (to go with the Aldi shoes I couldn't help getting the other day)

Does anyone have any recommendations on the low end stuff, or is it all much the same and should be avoided ?

Oh and one other thing...Has anyone used The bike computer app on the iphone ? and more importantly is there a recommended iphone mount ?

Cheers

imho services to bikes that have not been ridden/serviced for a long time can produce a long list of repairs/expense from the shop

good luck
