Hi all,

Can someone please recommend me a fairly decent 700c disk hub rear wheel.

I currently use a Mavic Open Pro with a Deore disk hub which is now going in the bin......

After my recent mis fortune with the above hand built wheel im not fussed what it is as long as its robust. I'm prepared to pay around £150 for it so but I'm not sure what to get ??.

Thanks

try searching under 29er, there's lots of info about rear wheels for 700c MTB's, must be one of those that will fit the bill. On SJS cycles it indicates that only the Shimano SLX is rated for the torque of a 700c wheel.

Thanks for the replies I like to run 25mm so not sure the 29ers will suite.

The open pro I have is hand built but to be blunt it has caused me no end of problems with spokes loosing tension and going out of true.

Im happy to have one built again but would need recommending a decent wheel builder that could do what I want.

hmmm, the 29er's are only wider rims as it's expected that you'll be running big tyres. I've not used disc brakes so don't know what additional stresses they place on a wheel. I was under the impression that the stresses were between the hub and the forks, rather than spokes.

Can you not take your current wheel to a good shop for retruing etc. It's also not beyond the realms of possibility that it's a dodgy rim.

Thanks Guys, I might give Harry a call see if he would either re-build it or build me a new one

As above. Deore / open-pro is a classic combination. No reason why that wheel shouldn't work. It might just need to be re-built

Can I have it? (seriously)
I will even buy it off you.

Nothing wrong with Deore on Open Pro. Thats a classic combination.

If you're going to bin the wheel can I buy it?

Perhaps a deep sectioned rim?
Hand-builts (when done correctly) always beat machine built wheels.

The hubs are fine Ive no problems there its the wheel tension and the constant need to true it thats bothering me.

If the rim is fine for whats its worth ill ask about a re-build with new spokes or something.

I really would not want to subject you to the problems this wheel has caused.

I have read and spoken to people about the different stresses a disk hub and braking would cause on the non drive side spokes in use. I suppose with this in mind I don't think it was built properly.

Ill try with the rebuild but its last chance saloon for this baby, ive had enough.
