I have a Raleigh Record Ace circa 1980, with a 125mm rear drop out spacing. It came with a 6 speed freewheel, largest cog 28. I want to fit a 7 speed freewheel (ie screw on) with the same stack height (just over 3 cm), with a 32 max cog, but with the next cog size close to that, ie 28. I do not want a megadrive freewheel with a big gap between largest and next largest.

Has anyone ever seen such a freewheel?

Sorry about the typo in the heading. How do I correct it?

And how do I put this thread also on to the technical forum?

I am not very computer literate.

Probably the easiest way to have things moved is to use the Report button at the bottom of the post box and ask the Mods, who read and act on the Reported posts to move it/edit it ... which I have done for you !

... this time, as you are Special Member 25,000

Thank you. SJS Cycles have come up with the desired product, the IRD Defiant, a rather expensive 7 speed freewheel with a steady progression of cogs from 13 to 32. So my problem is solved. I am grateful.

You may have a problem with your existing derailleur not being able to cope with the bigger cog. Give it a go but I think you may need to change it. I am assuming it is a short cage model.

apropos my last comment, when I went to my local bike shop to buy a freewheel remover (different size to my cassette remover) the mechanic sold me a Shimano Alvio derailleur suitable for my new 32 tooth 7 speed freewheel on the basis that the Alvio was the highest spec Shimano that could be used with a 7 speed, because the higher spec items wouldn't index properly as they had a different geometry. Not sure about that. Anyone care to comment?

Your were indeed told rubbish. You can go back and ask him why the Alivio RD430 ad says 9 speed and RD410 tech doc says 8 speed then?

The only current Shimano mtb rear mech you should avoid are the 10 speed ones, which do require different cable pull so will not index properly, assuming you have indexed shifter, that is.

Thank you for your advice. However, he didn't say that Alvio wouldn't handle 8 or 9 speeds, only that higher spec Shim derailleurs wouldn't handle 7 speeds. The question is, really, are the above-Alvio models all in fact 10 speed changers?

When my 7 speed sora finally died, my (trusted) LBS told me the same, & fitted it, works better than the old one...
