As a longstanding contented apollo owner i recently joined this forum and was surprised to discover the general low regard that apollo bikes are held in. Anyway as a result i decided to upgrade. The ridgeback 501gs seemed to be refered to as a generic sound old bike so when i saw one on ebay for £35 i bought it. Had to replace one pedal, tighten the fork bearings , lower the saddle and put a schwalbe on the rear, test ride round the block is aok were good to go.
Sunday weather conditions ideal for cycling - dry warm and overcast with no noticeable wind.
Backpack heavy with kagool , water , tools , spare tube and car tyre pump.
My farthest ride ever so far - 50 miles watford to maidenhead and back via amersham. Worst spot was up gore hill to the drop down into amersham. About 4 hours overall so 12.5 miles per hour. Not wonderfull but my weight dropped from 81.8kg sunday morning to 79.4 this morning. - broken the 80kg barrier.
My initial misgivings about ridgeback quickly forgotten and its vg. (my main feeling on completion was that of releif - that i hadnt wasted £35.) My apollo will still be the default wherever a rack is required which it often is.
Thanks to all forum posters - one delinquent apollo owner is on the road to redemption.
