Hi all,

I've just aquired a 1959 Claud Bultler from my local freecycle site. It has an old 5 speed freewheel that's basically had it but I can't get it off. Is there a special tool for the job, Its got 2 little holes in the middle of the free wheel but I don't have anything to get any purchase on it. I've just hit my finger with a hammer!

When I had my old bike, my LBS took the freewheel off for me, as they had the tool and a vice in the shop... (and I'd bought the new one from them)

They're a bugger to shift at the best of times, and 40 years on is not the best of times. As others have said, your LBS is your first port of call. (If you're nice they'll do it for nothing, no strings, and you can get one off ebay for a few quid. But buy an inner tube while you're there.)

Give the back-end of the freewheel a squirt of penetrating spray. Rocol do a good one. WD40 . This is the only time this stuff should be used - because it's a 'releasing oil'.

By the time you get to the LBS, it will have seeped in.

If you have a freewheel removing tool (with the splines) and access to a good vice....
clamp the splined tool in the vice so it faces upwards, place the wheel onto the tool. then you have the entire circumference of the rim to get loads of leverage to unscrew the wheel off the freewheel.

yeah done just that on two old knackered wheels i had. take out the bearings first, insert unlocking key (about a fiver) & put wheel against a wall fit adjustable to key and use brute force. It worked for me twice. Good luck
