5 speed bar end shifters?

hi.

My dad is building himself a trike as medical conditions make a regular bike difficult to operate.

As somebody who enjoys building things he is making his own from scrap bikes rather than buying.

He wants to use a single bar end shifter for his gears as the steering layout makes grip shift awkward. It is a 6 speed shimano cassette, with 1 gear being used permanently for drive to the rear wheels. So does a 5 speed bar end shifter exist?

With Shimano bar ends you can switch the indexing off. I'd be more concerned about running the gears like that though, the 2 chains won't run on adjacent sprockets as there isn't the clearance between them. @voyager may have a better solution as to how to run the gears but my trike uses a sprocket welded to the flange of the (geared) intermediate hub, maybe these can be purchased.

That chainline spells trouble.

My dad said he managed to separate the gears and there is clearance for both chains.

Diacompe do a non-indexed/friction bar end shifter.

I shown him this, he objects to the price

It's a scrap metal bitsa bike. But this kind of stuff is beyond my experience.

Clever cheap solutions are welcome.

My idea was an old down tube shifter

I'd only expect you to get 4 speeds at the most - the chains would colide if they were on adjacent sprockets.
If it is a six speed block, you need a six speed bar end shifter and set the limit screw on the rear mech to limit it from reaching the largest (or largest) sprocket. Set the cable length so 1st on the shifter is the lowest gear you are using and it will work - but your last 2 clicks on the shifter won't do anything.

The Dia-Compe shifters are very similar to down-tube shifters - I have them on one bike. It should be easy to get hold of an old down-tube shifter off a scrap bike or perhaps from a bike shop parts bin.
