I know it's not much by many people's standard, but in August i've done just over 400miles.

This is by far the highest monthly milage i've ever done and i know from yesterday's 46 mile "long" ride it's making me a stronger rider. What's interesting is this milage is made up mainly of regular commutes, 15 miles each way to work which i do twice or maybe three times a week and the odd 20 or 25 mile ride at weekends. The longest ride was yesterday's 46miles (that in itself is my second longest ever ride).

Which makes me wonder whether it's regular time in the saddle keeping the miles ticking that makes you a better rider rather than just the occasional long ride?

Nice milage, regular saddle time is always going to keep you fitter than the occasional long ride, until I retired recently, I cycled to work everyworking day whilst the distances where not mind blowing, it mean mean that my muscle structure is being worked on a daily basic, whereas only doing occasional long rides, means for some of milage at the start of the ride, you have to retrain the stale muscles.

Nice.

I wish I was able to do that this month. Unfortunately I was relocated to another office for a few weeks which was impossible (pretty much) to commute to on a road bike at the moment (they are resurfacing a 2 mile stretch of road and it is very bumpy and I saw a guy get his wheels stuck to the hot tarmac this week ).

I have done about 80 miles this month of casual riding which isn't enough at all. I did a nice 15 mile ride this afternoon which was fun though. As of next Wednesday I move to a new office so will be doing my best to commute to work everyday.

Well done Paul, its a damm sight more than the average, iirc its circa 46miles per annum.

Long rides are good but regular rides no matter what length are better for you if the long rides are infrequent. Anyway you'll have to be riding regularly to do do longer rides

Well done. I had set a target of 300 miles for August and have completed 200 miles so far (regular weekend riding).
My inital plan to cover the remaining 100 miles this weekend have been scuppered by the demon drink and whilst I sit her with a glass of wine, my hopes for the outstanding 100 are just that a hope. Planning on an early night tomorrow and a 40/50 mile morning ride.
