Just completed my 3rd 100 mile ride this afternoon.

The 1st one last year took nearly 7 hours on a predominately flat route. Completed the 2nd 3 wks ago using the same route as the 1st, took 6.5 hours. For both these I was riding in a group of 4 riders so was restricted by the slowest but I always felt I could do it quicker.

The 3rd 100 miler completed this afternoon on my own was on a completely different route and had a number of sharp climbs which really sapped the energy levels, to the point were the last 15 miles was sheer hell. It was only will power that got me to the end. Despite this managed to finish in just under 5.5 hours with only one wee stop and a stop at a level crossing. Is this a reasonable time or am I still a complete novice with lots of training still to do?

All views gratefully received.

Well done you!! I have also recently done 3 of these - 3 consecutive weekends but 3 different routes. No significant hills - all were around 7 hrs so IMO your time is superduper fast!! How do you feel after?

At the end could have just fallen off my bike, legs all wobbly, couldn't stand up straight, felt sick and horrible pain across the back of my neck!!!! WHY DO WE PUT OURSELVES THROUGH THIS???? But I still enjoyed it. Absolutely crazy.

You done any training for these, or do you just get up and ride?

5.5 hours means average speed of 18 mph. That's pretty decent I'd say.

Am down to do a 100 meself in late August and done no prep for it.

I do commute 120 miles a week, but they're in chunks of 24 miles daily with a whole day's rest in-between morning and afternoon commute.

I often (once a month) ride about 60 miles without probs though leaves me a little tired. Reckon 100 is gonna kill me.

Yes fair amount of training, spinning 6 or 7 x /wk. 50 to 70 miles on road bike 2 or 3 x /wk. Also some charity rides during the summer, already completed the Belvoir Bike ride in aid of BHF, Great Notts bike ride in aid of local hospice, 100 mile fun ride from Newark to Wells next the Sea and doing this again in Sept, doing coast to coast in 3 weeks time, booked for the Cat and Fiddle and the Welsh Etape Cymru (100 mile route on closed roads inc. over 6000ft of climbing) both of these in Oct.

If you've done 60 miles without any problems and ride regularly, then 100 miles as a one off shouldn't be a problem as long as you take your time. Also a lot easier if you are doing it in a group where everybody is helping each other.

Should have added that its always the last mile of the 100 which is the hardest

, what we should do is the last mile first then it wouldn't be difficult

That's a good time - I still haven't done a 100.

I got to 70 miles on the Etape Caledonia and had my lowest point. I thought 11 miles to go. 11 miles is very very easy - and decided to treat it as the start of an 11 miler rather than the end of 81. It worked for me!

I've known marathon runners who take the same approach when they get to 20 miles. "Only 10k to run. I can run 10k. That's easy!"

Yes I tried that approach at the 75 mile point thinking are well only 25 miles to go, done that loads of times. But for some reason it didn't work and it felt like a real slog to the finish. It was probably because I'd gone to fast early on whilst feeling fresh and didn't pace myself enough.
