Well today i did a 32.2 mile ride into the north york moors at a average speed of 14mph it actually went up don't know why.

There was a slight head wind when i set off but soon eased off when i was further in the ride but a strong head wind coming back which was annoying (what can you do)

A few hills and decents which i might have conquered which is a great acheivement for me as i had a few nerves with a descent on a local route but hopefully conquer as the one i did today had a 17% descent and a 13% climb.

I really enjoyed it and i seen abit of the route which i am doing on a sportive later in the year even though i don't know if i want to do the 50 mile or the 75 mile one.

Nice!

Is this the average length of your rides?

I'm averaging 20 miles at 14.3 mph atm but starting to up my training now to get into some 30+ mile rides this week ready for the spring and then some sportives im hoping to do later in the year.

If your comfortably doing 30+ miles now i would work hard and go for the 75 mile one for sure, bigger challenge and you would feel more proud when you complete it

Awesome..!

I am a scary cat when it comes to going downhill so I totally understand what you mean..

And by the way you beat me..! I did a 2 km ride yesterday after 3 weeks or so... (have to start somewhere right?) But I already can see that I am going to change a few break pads a year here in Spain....

Great start, looking pretty good with those stats for this time of year and has already been said - proper hills. Which Sportives are you aiming for ? To my shame I was finding the pretendy hills in rolling Northamptonshire hard enough on Saturday !

That is an impressive ride for a beginner!

An unwary rider would be looking down the hill and worrying about the steepness of the descent. What they should really be concerned about are the wheel-catching slotted grates. If I were to ride down that hill I would do it quickly enough to be able to bunnyhop over them.

If your tyres are fat enough, riding over them square on would be fine. It's the junctions at the bottom which would worry me... that and the way that the road up the hillside opposite appears like a wall! Yes, I'd be avoiding that one if I could...

Excellent ride and excellent average speed. I'm a very experienced rider but live on the flat. You'd have been waiting for me a lot if I came with you.

Just one point; it's time to round your distance to the nearest mile because
  1. However you are measuring your distance, it's not accurate to 3 significant figures.
  2. It's kind of like giving your age as "32 and a half"

I see what you mean... Makes lots of sense... But I can't bunny hop a coin laying on the ground...!!! Much less something in that hill that is like 25% gradient...

If I try I am sure I end up somewhere in the E.R... (by the way is also located at the top of another steep hill)

I would be okay riding over the grates on my fat mountain bike tyres, but doing it on the 23Cs on my road bikes would be asking for trouble ...

Thinking about it, crossing the grates at 45 degrees to the direction of the slots would probably be the safest choice. I'm quite a good bunnyhopper but you don't want to get a fast downhill bunnyhop wrong! (Having said that, bunnyhopping is a useful skill to have in reserve for emergencies. I bunnyhopped debris which fell off a skip wagon in front of me once, as a safer alternative to swerving in heavy traffic.)

I am used to steep descents round here. Follow THIS ONE down the hill on Streetview and you will see what I mean! :okay:
