Ive currently got an older bike in that isnt worth too much value wise but has 3 speed sturmey archer hub gearing. Was wondering if anybody had any information on this type of gearing, how does it work etc? is it any good? Reliable?
I was going to sell the bike on after cleaning it up a bit but If the 3 speed sturmey stuff is any good I was thinking about taking it off and using it on a future build maybe. So, are they any good or just scrap?

I know someone who still has the same three speed hub, on her bike, as supplied when bought in '65.
Serviced at the local bike shops(one closed when the owner died). Can't see why you'd consider them scrap.

I've a thirty year old five speed hub.(Part of a hybrid gearing/dual drive gearing system). Only had to replace one axle, various other parts have been replaced a bit more frequently however.

Do a quick search for 'sturmey' on here (ie CC) and you will find out all you want, and much more. I suspect all those on here of a certain age will have had a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear in their youth.

Ive done a quick google and all i can find is how tos on adjustment or listings for spares. Ive only just started to work on bikes and ive personally never seen one hence asking. Worth saving off of this heap then and putting onto a future build?

To answer your question as regards worth saving, I'd say it is. Some older bike don't quite look right with "modern" gearing systems in plac. Others just won't take them, not built for them.

@Ajax Bay, see the post above your first one.

It won't have a great deal of value unless it's one of the more unusual ones as they made millions of the things and they are still in production but absolutely definitely not scrap.

With basic care they run practically forever and with a sensible choice of chainring/sprocket they provide all the gearing most cyclist will ever need.

I have Sturmey Archer hub gears dating back to 1930s still working. There are always people who will want them for old bike build projects. You can date the hub as it will have a set of number s on it -eg. 11 54 - so that would be a November 1954 models. It should also have the hub type on in - AW for eg. Refurbing them is usually cheap and spares are still easily available. They are quite straightforward to do if you are mechanically minded.

Bought cheap and has no real value to me, quite tatty. However seems to be working.
Ive put the bike up for sale but if it doesnt sell in the next week or so Ill just strip it for its parts for a future project.
(EDIT : put it up for sale, sold within 2 hours, will take another look at sturmey archer in the future)
