Until now I've been cycling to work in a pair of extremely cheap shorts from sports direct. They actually haven't been too bad but now I'm looking for something for the winter that'll keep my knees a bit warmer and stop the rain effectively enough (my commute is only 20 minutes so moderate rain isn't a great concern). I'm thinking 3/4 length water-repellent shorts would be good in this regard as they'll survive a light shower and allow the air to circulate up through the shorts.

Something like this:

or these:

Anyone else have experience of these types of shorts?

many thanks

Smash the cistern
Humvees aren't really water repellent.

James10, you must be hardy sort if you're planning to get through the winter allowing the icy winds to whistle up your trouser legs

Fast and careful!
Shorter rides you just have to grin and bear I wear cheaper dhb bibs and put them in the drier at work or ring them and radiator them ,any thing water proof can make you sweat ,well it does me,keep warm,on a 100 km audux last month it was still warm but it ,rained like a scene from Forrest Gump ,sometimes the rain came up ,I still wore bib shorts ,but rubbed a pre exercise muscle rub in my legs they were still warm and the water beaded off them after four hours of submarine riding,
