27 x 1 1/14 compatible wheels for an old CB?

Hi all

Am in the process of respraying an old Claud Butler Majestic (cirvca 1980) at the moment and I want to replace a few bits and bobs. I reckon if I could and, more importantly,if it was worth doing to actually replace the old wheels with something newer and better.

So, first question, I understand that they would be 27 x 1 1/4, is this right?

Second, is replacing the wheels for a bike of this era a good idea? Is it worth it?

Lastly, if it's worth it then what choice of wheels would I have with such dimensions? I've been told that there would be very little choice?

Many thanks.
Sam

PS I don't really want to spend anymore than a hundred squid and I don't want anything authentic.

You could replace the 27" wheel with 700s which are more widely available with better choices but just check you have enough adjustment in your brake calipers first as the 700 is slightly smaller rim diameter than a 27" wheel (630mm v 622mm).

27 x 1 1/4 rims and tyres are still available. Halfords stock 27 x 1 1/4 tyres. I have one on my Peugeot and it seems to be a perfectly good tyre.

I just got a pair of Michelin 27 1 1/4 tyres for my even older bike. I did put new wheels on it in about '94, though, and they seem to be doing ok.
