Hi there,

I've recently repaired my MTB with the hope of turning it into a general purpose bike comfortable both on tarmac and dirt tracks. I also want to use it for the odd tour.

All that's left to sort out are the tyres. The current standard 26x1.95 MTB tyres are painfully slow on tarmac so I'm looking to get a pair of 26x1.75, perhaps even 1.5.

I was looking at the Marathon Pluses however not sure I want such heavy tyres on what is an already hefty sized frame. Any suggestions?

To improve efficiency on the road you will need to avoid knobblies (e.g. go for slicks) and get tyres that can take higher pressure; to improve liveliness you will need to go for light tyres. Schwalbe Kojak, which come in 1.35 as well as 2.0, especially the folding rather than the wired versions, are amongst the best for meeting all those requirements, but they are nowhere as puncture resistant as Marathon Pluses, but then with a pair you save nearly 1kg where weight matters most. Or you can go for compromises of which there are many choices. You can check out their website for detailed weights and fairy protection comparison.

Thanks for the suggestions. Think I'll go for the Marathon Plus 1.75 due to their durability and reliability. They may weigh a bit more but I'm prepared to accept that.

I use Michelin country rock on my MTB use for the on road commute and cycle paths/tracks with the kids.
Can pump them up to 75 psi, a very noticeable difference over knobbiles on the road

Hi,

The Country Rocks are a light and very zippy tyre to slap on a
MTB. Still do dry off road stuff but won't do wet off road mud.

75 psi is way too hard for the best comfort versus rolling on the road,
and it will prematurely square off the centre of the (rear) tyres.

rgds, sreten.

I bought a pair of them for £13 delivered .....
Go figure, somebody messed up .....
