Are they hard to get hold of now?

I have a 5 year old bike and looking to replace the rear with a quality QR rim type brake but they seem really thin on the ground.

Are disk brakes the way to go now?

They're not as readily available as once they were, but they are still out there, and of course any good LBS will build you one. I've been researching recently because my rear, whilst perfectly serviceable, has a freewheel rather than a cassette and I need to get it off to grease the bearings - but I don't have the tool, the cost of which I can spin as a reduction on the cost of a new wheel

Taylors-Wheels on ebay also have them. They're made in Germany. I really don't get the point of wheels that can be rim or disc, as Decathlon sell. Surely you want one or the other, rather than the weight of a disc mount you won't use, or the weight of a thicker rim you won't use?

Not much weight difference if running rim brakes. They just happened to be in stock and available. They are cracking wheels for the money. Light strong and cheap

PS I missed your bit about dual use. The cross rides are pretty light and you don't notice the disc bolt points due to the hub design. My reason was I could always put them on my lads bike as an upgrade.
